Week 2: Kyoung Hwan Kim

First of all, I'd like to say that I only feel lukewarm about this illustrator/concept artist's body of work as a whole. However, I was immediately drawn to this image, which was created for an illustration contest. On his deviantArt page, the artist has titled the piece "Alice in Wonderland", and I think it is a great and original take on that theme, even if it is difficult to make the connection initially. With linework that looks like a nod to Yoshitaka Amano, and a vaguely Miyazaki-esque setting, there is an immediate charm to this piece that made it irresistible to me. The color scheme creates a mood that is warm and inviting, and though there are some slightly grotesque (admittedly, very cutesy grotesque) elements that have been worked in as well, they don't feel out of place in this world. Plus, as someone who is interested in concept art as a whole, I really like Alice's design. I think this is just a very successful piece overall.

This artist's personal site is at http://www.tahraart.com. He has a deviantArt account at http://tahra.deviantart.com.

  1. I really like the color palette he used; as you said, it makes the mood of the piece seem very warm, and it catches the eye.

He almost has too much going on in the background, but the colors he uses on Alice help her stand out from the busy setting.

  2. I think the color is outstanding. It moves across the piece and I really like that they used both warm and cool colors. It seemed like a smart idea to add some blue in the corner so that allows the warm colors to dominate. That makes it a warmer piece like what everyone said, which does make it inviting, which was said already also. The detail is also very intriguing and love how they fade out in the background.

  3. I like the detail/linework he put into this, he must have been working in a very large format! as far as his color palette goes, in color theory they teach you to pair warm colors with cool colors to balance your composition, and he has pulled off that technique very well!

  5. I really like the unique use of perspective in this piece. Seems to be a skewed form of three point. The overall theme of the piece is quite fantastical and dreamlike, and the warped perspective adds well to that quality. His color scheme is gorgeous too!
