Derrick J. Wyatt

For this week of class, I decide to share the works of Derrick J. Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt is an artist and character designer that have done a lot of work for various western animated television series, notably Teen Titans and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. In recent years, he’s become well known as the head art director for Transformers: Animated. As last week’s class was a discussion on caricature and the use of exaggeration of figures and faces in illustration, my mind immediately turned to Wyatt’s designs. He’s capable of accentuating details in his drawings, whether they are that of an original character or even portraiture of an actual person. His character’s are often able to say a lot about their particular personality just by how they are drawn; having a small body and rather lean proportions we get a very energetic speedster, or a gentle giant with large girth but rather relaxed facial expression.
