Tim Burton

I figured this sketch by Tim Burton would be an appropriate follow up to Valentine's Day. I'm sure we all know the work of Tim Burton thanks to "Nightmare Before Christmas" which is still very popluar years after it's making. He's instant success off of one idea inspires me to want to do my best. I like this particular drawing because it seems to hearken back to his work before "Nightmare before Christmas", although I'm not certain when the particular sketch was made. I like it though because it looks like a simple pencil doodle yet it says so much. I don't know why he drew it, but I would imagine he made it out of boredom or because he got tired of too much PDA and lovey-dovey couples. I like looking at the early rough sketches of artists to see how they develope their style over time.

I'm certain there are other morbid artists before Tim Burton, for me he is the first to incorporate dark, creepy, and other humorously unpleasant elements into illustrations intended for youths. I think he paved the way for artists like Jhonen Vasquez, Roman Dirge, Brett Helquist, and many others. Burton has a whole collection of characters on his website and it's interactive. Fun!

  1. This is my favorite image of the week. I love Tim Burton's style. Even though this is just a sketch, it encapsulates his unique style and has a beautiful expressive line quality. I've always enjoyed how Burton's characters have some of the best facial expressions. The face on cupid is superb, definitely made me laugh!

  2. I have never seen anything of his that looks "finished" even the illustrations he does for his books/comics look less smooth and together. I have to say that this is really clean looking compared to the other stuff of his like Oyster Boy or what-not.

  3. This image is so funny. I love how grotesque the face of the woman is and how sinister the cupid looks. These exaggerated expressions really make the image comical.

  4. Tim Burton defintely has a style all his own. I've always loved his movies since I was a kid, but when I started looking at his artwork, I actually fell more in love with his art. I think his art was exhibited at MoMA a year or two ago, and now I would especially enjoy seeing his work someday..

  5. I love looking at artist's rough sketches and early development drawings as well. Sometimes I enjoy those more than some finished works. The expressions are very dramatic and ghastly.
