This is a piece by Jessie Willcox Smith who did illustrations for magazines like Harper's, Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal. The thing I really like about this piece is the lettering at the bottom. I think the piece itself is so interesting but the letter at the bottom is so intricate and detailed. The two kids in the picture are positioned so that there is an extra level of intrigue. They look so curious about going through the door that it makes the viewer feel a sense of their curiosity. I appreciate the way that the artist has placed the hand of the older child. It looks protective and encouraging at the same time. The artist also makes a point of creating very detailed backgrounds in her pieces. She also does a lot of children who are engaged in an activity and thus only a portion of their faces are shown. I think this is an effective way of encouraging the viewer to take a longer look and really ponder the activities and thoughts behind the children.

I enjoyed looking at this piece, what I thought was interesting was way that Jessie put so much detail and color behind the door, but in the space in front of the door there is nothing that as detailed or as colorful.
