Edward Gorey

from Amphigorey

Edward Gorey really fascinates me because his work seems timeless. For over 40 years he created these weird time consuming drawings and they never get old. Even the old ones feel like they were born yesterday. His line work is whats really breathtaking. You can really see how passionate he is about these wonderful drawings. His work is often cynical or humorous. His Gashlycrumb Tinies is pretty popular and is a really funny book about children dying. If that sounds horrifying to you than you probably haven't read it, which means you should. His style is perfect for the type of subject matter he covers. Its creepy and etched, meticulously detailed, and often only black and white. You can get lost in the detail he puts on wallpaper, or a design on the rug. Your eyes may stray from blood splatter to the lines in a tree. It's the effort of the whole piece that makes it really work.

  1. I have seen a few of these and I am always amazed at the time that seems to go into each one. I am always confused as to why they patches of ink seem so choppy.

  2. It took me a while to figure out exactly what was happening in the picture. The longer I looked at it the more I noticed. I feel like we just missed an epic scene and now all that is left is the demise of the little girl in the white dress.

  3. I am incredibly jealous of his patience to do such time-consuming work. And, you're right. His style seamlessly matches his subject matter. There is something really sweet about his work even though it is pretty macabre.
