Charles Burns

Charles Burns is a cartoonist from Philadelphia. He creates meticulous, high contrast, and there is a kind of science fiction vibe from his illustrations. I stumbled across his work when flipping through the Chicago Reader newspaper. I decided to look up some of his other work online and found some really interesting stuff. He illustrated Iggy Pop's album "Brick by Brick" and created a Harvey award winning graphic novel called " The Black Hole." Which he worked on from 1993 to 2004. The top illustration is a part of that graphic novel. The attention to detail is really amazing. I like his heavy line work a lot. He definitely has his own style. The other two peices are from a series he illustrated called The Goon Squad. The Goon Squad is a collection of cards, each showing a character from a mutant universe he created. The bottom character looks really spaced and reminds me of the lawyer in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. While the middle character looks like a school teacher who lost her mind.
