Funny Animal Books

This cover of New City was illustrated by Michael Arthur (incorrectly credited as Michael Jewell in the credits of the newspaper). The colors caught my eye from down the street and upon closer inspection, I really enjoyed the drawing. The characters in it all have their own distinct personality and tell part of the story. The drawings are fairly flat, but the line weight gets lighter as your eye moves to the background. This, in combination with the the 3 colors used are effective at creating a sense of depth to a drawing that would otherwise be two dimensional.

Michael Arthur is a comic illustrator who recently moved to Chicago from Atlanta, GA. Many of the characters in the illustration above are regulars in his comic strip which he publishes on his website. His website is a combination blog and web comic.

  1. How lame that this guy was discredited!
Anyway, I love that he represented this human behavior on the street with animals. It really is kind of a zoo out there...
