Matt Furie

Matt Furie is a San Francisco based artist that I have discovered recently from surfing through www.fecalface.com, an art blog that I tend to ruffle trough a lot. I remembered seeing his work on there along with an interview a while back, and I recently came across it again and was totally inspired not just by the detail and style of his work, but just how ridiculous it is. He says in his bio and some interviews that he is inspired by child hood movies like The Neverending Story and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. He describes this drawings and illustrations to be “Children’s book illustrations for adults.” I think his style and weirdness is awesome, and I can totally relate this to my own work. I may not be was weird as Matt Furie, but I am inspired by the same kind of things as him. I have a passion for creating characters and I love everything about what he does. He creates weird characters, in weird situations as fine art and illustration work. His characters are mainly animals and creatures, they are furry, have scales, and have human characteristics but with a cartoon style that I admire a lot.

  1. The thing about "weird" art is that it really makes the viewer stop and think about it. Instead of just flipping by this, one has to stop and really digest what your looking at. And then muse about what is going on. I find myself thinking, I understand what I am seeing, but I wonder what happened to cause this scene to have unfolded this way.

  2. The time that must have gone into these must have been epic. It looks like he uses just coloured pencils, crazy stuff.

  3. I really enjoy seeing artists put incredible detail into their characters. And the fact that he draws from childhood movies(which I also adore) makes his work so much more appealing to me. The colors are great too, they're whimsical like in a childrens book. I bet his fans probably appreciate seeing cameos, like big bird's head on a scaly body riding a bike with a reptile. Who wouldn't think that's awesome?

  4. This art is really trippy! I love the texture on the blue creature, he looks like melting candle wax, and while the shading is simple it gets a visual texture very well. However, at first I wasn't impressed or convinced by the bird. He looks stiff, his feathers very straight, his wings and feet are in awkward positions. But then I realized, that would make a lot of sense, because the bird is supposed to be dead. So, the stiffness of the one character against the fluidity of the other creates a cool juxtaposition and conveys the death and life, respectively, of each figure. But I still like the blue guy better.
