Mike Mignola is a comic book artist and storyteller. Most famous for his Hellboy series and the subsequence B.P.R.D. series, that has a storyline that runs parallel to the Hellboy storyline. His style is simple and angular, which is one of the reasons that I like his work. I think that this brings a fresh new look to comics, which are so often super clean and tight.
I think that the imperfect qualities that are portrayed allow the reader to apply a more personal aspect within the readers mind. But I also think that the imperfection in his illustrations allows younger artists to be of less despair about personal ability. Mignola does not let his art carry him alone but allows his art to be a compliment to his story’s.
His work really inspired me to seriously consider becoming an illustrator. I have been pretty mesmerized by the way that he draws hand. Some people stress to perfect hands but Mignola just makes a decent square with some rectangles and is done.

I like not only the style, but the content of his work. His images are powerful and haunting.
ReplyDeleteand yes, hands are very tricky- it all comes down to correct proportions.
