Marcel Dzama

Marcel Dzama is not actually an illustrator but is considered a fine artist. He has been one of my favorite artists for some time. He comes from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and most of his work is based off that area. His work is based on moments from a "mythology of Winnipeg" he has created, himself. He is mainly known for his two-dimensional works in watercolor, graphite, pen, and a certain brand of root-beer syrup which creates a tone of brown that he claims to have never found in any paint color as of yet. His figures are often disfigured, or have animal parts. On the surface the work is playful and cartoon like, with dark undertones or details. He also has characters that appear from work to work such as a vampire and a group of women in military dress. Dzama has also done cover work for "They Might Be Giants," "Beck," and "The Weakerthans." He was also asked to art direct the music video for "No One Does it Like You" by Department of Eagles, which can be found here:

  1. Wow this piece really has a strong message to it. It really talks to the survival of the fittest in me. It also has a strong sense of just hunting for the fun of it, trophy/ sport hunting, which I hate. Even though this artist is not considered an illustrator he has a strong illustrative style.
