NMRosario - Week Two
I decided to choose different topics each week for our 15 illustrations/sketchbook assignments. The topic I picked for week two were illustrations that came solely from Mens Health magazines. Basically, because I had old issues laying around that I could rip up. I never realized how many illustrations Mens Health had in their issues, there were quite a lot. Some of them were really cool looking but none of them were interesting enough for me to post on here. Since my week two topic was based off Mens Health it got me thinking about body proportions in comic books and how exaggerated they can be at times. A few weeks ago I was looking around on Deviant Art and came across this illustration of Beast (from X-Men) by the artist Nathan Rosario. This is one of my favorite renditions of Beast I've seen. I also came across a great tutorial by the artist which is helpful for those who want to learn how to color their artwork using Photoshop: http://nmrosario.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d2p6vr8

the best comic book artists usually draw to human proportions and use models, the best realize that Superman, or Spider-man wouldn't need to build ridiculous amounts of muscle if they have super strength. There are many that don't do proper research or sketches and there are a few infamous for gafs caused by a complete lack of knowledge of human anatomy, one in particular is Rob Liefeld

who drew this lovely image for the cover of a Captain America Comic.
P.S. why won't link work?
The anatomy and pose on this guy is great! I'm also still trying to get a good grasp on anatomy as well. Since I usually draw figures from waste up, I find myself having trouble drawing legs and feet correctly. Thanks for adding the link to the tutorial too, though I'm having trouble understanding it.
ReplyDeleteI'm learning about the anatomy now in Anatomical Modeling (clay modeling). Knowing the human body makes is making me a more confident artist. This picture of beast is a good example of why knowing the anatomy is important. When the characters don't have overly exaggerated features, they are more believable and relate-able.
ReplyDeletethe hands look a little off, but the feet are great. the whole image has a great style to it. thats what its all about, finding your own look and feel of things.
ReplyDeleteThe pose seems like a pretty common one, but when looking at it from the perspective the artist chose, it's much more interesting. And it makes you appreciate the extra trouble they took to create something much more dynamic.
