Final

My original idea for drawing the city from a far off, detached viewpoint didn't work out because there was far too much extra stuff to draw and consider, for the relatively small payoff of achieving a quiet, dry style. So I tried some more cinematic viewpoints, going much closer. The banana needed to be more imposing so I tried to make him cast as large of a shadow as possible. As I worked and reworked the shadow, I kept on removing buildings from the foreground to show it off, until I removed them altogether. I inserted people for scale and to reinforce the sense of the light (yes, I realize that the person in the foreground's shadow is off, as sunlight's too far to diverge like that).

I based the shape of the shadow entirely off of my best guess at how the banana would cast it, so I was pleasantly surprised that it looked vaguely like a hawk. I gave the banana legs to better anchor it to its shadow (at first it was floating so that its flat end was high enough to see behind a building. If I were to redraw it i would use stippling instead of hatching; the scanner destroyed my lines and made them darker, which ruins the lower contrast i was using to make the banana seem far off. Also, stippling would've avoided adding the extraneous texture on the banana, since he needs to be smoother as well.

extra credit- relationships

The first illustration to me is different compared to the others in a way that it illustrates two very different relationships at the same time. The first that we immediately notice is the loving relationship that the woman clearly has for cats. Her facial expression and the amount of cats present is just corky and loving. This part of the illustration is directed to those who love and are sometimes obsessed over their animals, especially cats in this case. The other relationship resent in this illustration is that between the woman and man. This portion of it is directed towards the people that love their spouses and may have to deal with their weird obsessions and love for other things, but yet really don’t know what to do or how to deal with it. The two relationships are very apparent in this illustration though it shows a different side to relationships.

The second illustration is of these little creatures named Pon and Zi. These characters are always illustrated in this very cute, bizarre situation with corny love sayings. These little creatures are more directed at teen audiences and maybe young adults. These illustrations always depict love but in ways that one is always trying to win the love of the other and in doing so in really exaggerated situations. In this particular illustration of them a direct depiction of relationships is present. In all the illustrations of these characters they are depicted in a relationship, but kind of exaggerates the love that these characters feel for one another.

My third illustration is from Alison Bechdel’s comic strips Dikes to Watch Out for. In this illustration it is clear that there is a relationship between the two women. It is kind of unclear though what type of relationship this may be. It could either be a loving, romantic relationship between to women, or just a friendship. Whatever the real relationship is behind it, it is an illustration geared towards both lesbians and straight women. I think that either could relate to the illustration whether it is a romantic relationship issue or just friends not taking the same side. Whatever the case may be it is very clear that there is some sort of relationship between the two characters.

My last illustration I found was that of a relationship between a grandma and grandchildren. I believe that the intended audience is meant for the grandchildren in this one. It’s a situation that most of us have to deal with in our life even though we totally hate it. This is a comical illustration to those of us that have had to endure these long hours of when our grandma catches us and were forced to listen to long random babble and rambling. It feels as is he has been tied to a chair forced to listen to the never-ending stories and complaints that old people always seem to have. Most children are taught not to be rude to their elders so we try to be polite and listen and after many attempts of escaping were finally free…hours later. This is a clear love hate relationship.

Extra Credit 2

These two images might be a stretch for some to imagine them as a portrayal of creativity, but to me are the embodiment of creativity itself, not only as artistic expression (creativity in itself) but as the subject matters own intrinsic value. Seriously, whoever drew Luke Skywalker using the force to take apart his lightsaber is an effing genius. For me this took on an entirely new dimension to star wars illustration. The fact that the artist had the creative drive to break down the physics of Luke's hand and saber make this an extremely creative and unique piece. The astronaut illustration is creative because (like the star wars illustration) it takes a common subject and turns it into an extremely unique piece of work. Maybe its my own personal opinion but, space suited ladies are pretty much one of the coolest things in the world. That being said, the use of different techniques for the piece add to its originality and its overall mood. To me the creative process brings up phrases like "cyber punk". The lack of narrative leave it up to the view to create their own story behind the image, adding to its strong, creative expression and influence.

Extra Credit 1

For this subject I decided to use illustrations by the artist Matthew Woodson, a contemporary illustrator who lives in the Chicago area. A lot of Woodson's subject matter deals with live and death in a variety of ways, but to me, is mostly depicted through images of nature. Each of these images depicts the subject in a different manner, the snake seem's obviously death, while the deer, life. The girl with the blood on her chest and face could mean a whole boat-load of different things but to me says that she killed something with her bare teeth (super sexy). That pretty much equates to death in my mind, but is a very interesting way of illustrating the subject, if that is at all what the artist intended it to mean. The birds are alive in a way that the deer is not, the image includes a birds nest filled with eggs, surrounded by adult birds, on a branch of a tree which too is alive. One of the greatest things about Matthew Woodson's art is the way he can illustrate both life and death, happiness and grief in such extremes of beauty.

ryan higgins - best day ever

oh hey

After giving it enough thought, I decided to change my direction. I feel that the original idea I had wasn't going anywhere. After enough frustration, I also think that it would be easier for me to draw about something I actually want to do in my life: go to Machu Picchu. I've had this image in my sketchbook for a few days, but finally got around to posting it. I changed my final to "Best Day Ever," as well. The image depicts Natalie (girlfriend) and I on top of a mountain overlooking machu picchu. The composition is a very loose homage to one of my favorite photographers, Martin Chambi.

Illustration Final Best Day

Here is my final illustration.

Redneck Comics

I did the colors in Illustrator then placed them in InDesign (at which point I decided to do the whole zoom in thing, and added some ink lines for the boxes after it was printed.

Final 'Worst Day Ever' Illustration

Here is my final illustration. I added the foot and also changed the mattress up a bit. It was done in watercolor and some pastels. I am pretty happy with the total outcome.

Best Day?

So here's my illustration, kinda thought it was due on Friday for some reason. As far as a topic for "best day" I figure it works kinda as a tank girl tribute, cause if you met someone like tank girl that would be dope. This is actually a copy of the original drawing that I started to color and kinda didn't go back to working on the original. This is good though because now I can keep working on the original and work in more of a narrative.

sketch 2

I decided i was going to add more kids to the scene doing different things in the snow, but here's what I have so far. I think it's coming together nicely.

sketch 2

Well my image isn't uploading but it still needs a lot of work including the fridge being 3-D, larger ticket that stands out, more beer, and different affects on the word "Winner." Just to name a few...

Draft

In rendering the city I'll have to abstract somewhat as the buildings get farther back. I was planning on making the tanks helmed by bunnies or at least with bunny insignia but I'd need to push another one closer to the foreground to get the details in.

Step Two

I reworked the arrangement of the characters and decided to add the food advertisements to elevate the perverse effect. I like the colors because they remind me of plastic and the toys you'd receive with you're. happy meal. Unsure whether I should color inside the lines or leave it a mess as it is now. I want to the picture to be gaudy and I think the color choice helps.

Sketch #2

I used a lot of the suggestions the class gave me. I added photos, a needle point pillow and a quilt to give the drawing some extra coziness.

sketch 2

getting there.. i have to add the city background... working on my perspective issues at the moment.. then it will be printed off and colored by hand with markers, gray scale. it should come out concept looking and really dramatic with a lot of lighting and dark shadows.

Rough of Illustration

Well it was the right way before but here is my rough. Its just the outline now but I am starting to like it more and more. You won't totally get the full effect till I color it in but for now it is getting there.

Best Day Ever - 2

final illustration rough (concept) sketch

I'm having a hard time coming up with a concept and design. thats why i haven't posted anything until this point. this could be fun, but I'm not 100% sold on it yet. i do however, know which style i am going to do it in.. an all gray scale marker rendering, to highlight the dramatic light and shadows, and only add color to the characters at the bottom... and in case you have no idea what this is.. as I'm sure you don't, its a power ranger illustration, where Goldar has won, destroyed the megazord, and the rangers are injured and or dying.. this is the best day for the evil villains, and the worst for the power rangers, and Earth. get it?

best day ever--- LATE

Here is my preliminary sketch for my best day ever illustration. My best day ever would feature me in the cast of Twin Peaks. My character would probably be the "mysterious reclusive guy who doesn't say much but knows very important little details about the murder of Laura Palmer." Hopefully I'd have a part in one of Dale Cooper's dream sequences or maybe get to kiss Audrey Horne or something. Though, I'd be content just to be on the show at all...

Winter Wonderland

I'm choosing to do a good day illustration. This is only a rough sketch of what I want to do so I'm going to be adding way more stuff in my drawing. I wanted it to be like a snow day for kids, and show kids having fun in the snow instead of going to school. I plan on making it more detailed and I wanted to make it very colorful.

Brittney's Worst Day EVAR

This is my worst day ever:

All of my irrational fears come to life! AHHHH!

Irrational Fears:

- Really really buff dudes
- Getting hit on by jerks and bros
- Huge muscles
- Veins
- Veiny muscles
- Needles poking veins

In this sketch, I'm on a char surrounded by jerky, buff, veiny dudes. And one of them is shooting steroids!  Needles poking veins! Ahhh!!! And they all have really weird shaped 'packages' and that kind of creeps me out.

Best Day Ever- Sean McInerney

For my best day ever I finally find the love of my life! I'm the "small fry" and the sexy tattoo'd up cheeseburgirl is supposed to be an example of my love for food and women. The cheese burger is seen having tattoos, suggestive attire, and of course smoking a cigarette. I want that negative connotation that people usually associate with fast food to still be there. I was also thinking of adding another girl who be depicted as a soft drink to complete the "combo." The background will probably be a city street and I want food to be incorporated in the "love stare" in some way. I was thinking tacos or something would be swirling around with the hearts. I was also thinking about making the image way more suggestive but I like the playfulness this image could evoke rather than pure smut.

Javi Suarez | rough (very rough)

I couldn't quite get the composition I want, but I wanted to do the Worst Day Ever with the running dry of Oil around the globe. I wanted to depict an overdramatic, apocalyptic scene with a sea of cars in the background. It obviously will be more animated than this, but I wanted to get my elements down on paper. I might even add some riots in front of smartcars, etc etc..

worst day rough

So far I have an end-of-the-world scenario with a whole city on fire... I don't know what to include as the cause of this destruction... Aliens, Godzilla, or some destroyer god/goddess? Or perhaps the juxtaposition of fire in a tranquil valley should be enough?

Best Day Ever - Ryan Higgins

I chose to illustrate an image depicting a kids best day ever. The two children are riding on top of a giant cat who is flying in the air. I'm not sure what the background will be yet, either clouds or a birds eye view of land plots far below. I took inspiration from The Neverevemding Story.

best day ever rough

For this project I was thinking of what some of my friends best and worse days would be. I don't know exactly what my best day would be, so I just did a general idea for people our age. I ended up going with winning the lottery and then filling up the fridge with beer and alcohol. The winning lottery ticket is displayed on the freezer door, along with alphabet magnets spelling out "winner."

Worst Day Ever ~ WIP

I was having a creative block and went for the everyday school "worst day ever" where you forgot today was the exam day. DUN DUN DUN. You've been slacking off the whole time too and now you are about to bomb the test. The audience is geared toward your average teen student.

Best Night Ever Rough

For me the best night ever was seeing all the stars clearly at the North Shore. This is a really rough sketch, and I plan to make a bunch of changes including a much better, more studied perspective, different cropping so the whole figure is in the piece, more brilliant feeling stars.
